Leasing vs. Financing a Car in New York
The honest answer is that neither leasing nor financing wins all the time. Here is how each one actually behaves in New York so you can pick based on your own driving.

The core difference
Financing means paying for the whole car, over time, with interest — and owning it at the end. Leasing means paying for the part of the car you use: the difference between its price today and its expected value at lease-end, plus rent charges. That is why leases of the same car almost always carry a lower monthly payment than a purchase loan of the same term.
At the end of a lease you hand the car back, buy it out for the residual value stated in your contract, or start a new lease. At the end of a loan you own the car outright and stop paying anything.
How New York taxes each path
New York applies sales tax differently to the two structures. On a lease, tax is collected on each monthly payment as it comes due. On a purchase, sales tax on the full vehicle price is due up front — usually rolled into the financed amount, where you also pay interest on it.
For many drivers this makes the lease the smoother cash-flow path: no large tax line at signing, and tax only on the portion of the car's value actually consumed.
Mileage, wear, and the exit question
Leases carry an annual mileage allowance — 10,000 miles a year is the most common structure on our specials — with a per-mile charge beyond it. If you drive long distances every month, financing avoids that meter entirely.
Normal wear is expected; excessive wear is billed at lease-end. A financed car can be sold whenever you like, while ending a lease early usually costs money. If your situation changes often, ask us about shorter terms before committing to 39 months.
When each one wins
Leasing tends to win when you like a new car every two to four years, want the lower monthly payment, prefer the warranty to always cover the car, and drive a predictable number of miles. Financing tends to win when you keep cars long after the loan ends, drive well beyond typical lease mileage, or want the freedom to modify or sell at any time.
Many of our customers lease the family commuter and finance the weekend car. If you are unsure, put both structures in front of us — call 516-218-2838 — and we will price the same car both ways with real numbers.
