New York Lease Taxes and Fees, Explained

New York collects sales tax on leased vehicles payment by payment, calculated on each month's charge including most rolled-in fees. There is no single up-front tax on the whole car as in a purchase. The combined state and local rate depends on where the vehicle is registered, so two identical leases can carry slightly different totals across boroughs and counties.

If a lender rolls fees into the payment, tax applies to those too — that is normal, not a surcharge.

The acquisition fee is the lease company's charge for setting up the lease — typically several hundred to around a thousand dollars depending on the lender — and it is usually capitalized into the payment. The disposition fee is charged at lease-end if you hand the car back rather than buying it; it is disclosed in the contract and is not a penalty.

Neither fee is set by the dealer or broker, and neither is negotiable in most programs. They should appear in your paperwork, not surprise you at the table.

New York registration, title, and plate fees are due at or near delivery, and lease registration runs on a two-year cycle. On our specials these costs are part of the due-at-signing line or itemized beside it — the sticker on every vehicle says whether taxes and fees are included or additional.

If you are transferring a current plate or have a trade-in with time remaining, the numbers adjust; we put the adjustment in writing with the quote.

Some specials are advertised with taxes and fees included — the payment you read is the payment you pay. Others quote the base payment with taxes and fees additional, which is the national-ad convention. Both are honest as long as the label is clear, and every vehicle page on this site states which structure it uses.
